Animal welfare advocates celebrated one success after another in Sacramento — the latest example of a continuing trend in which new laws to prohibit certain types of hunting, increase penalties for animal cruelty and boost other animal protections are gaining momentum in California, often with bipartisan support.

Calif. hunter slips, accidentally kills companion
On Saturday 27-year-old Ker Her of Clovis was killed near Lake Isabella when his hunting companion slipped and fell. The Bakersfield Californian reports that the man’s finger was on the trigger, and when he hit the ground the rifle fired.

Newly published research documents the discovery of blue fin tuna off the California coast with levels of radioactive cesium that were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna swimming there in previous years, reports Reuters.

(via Ecorazzi) California’s shark fin ban was a big step toward ending the shark fin trade, as the state is the largest market for fins outside of Asia. The ban goes into effect in January 2013. In the meantime, New York may be the next state to ban the sale of shark fins.
